An English writer of ghost stories and supernatural fiction, Algernon Blackwood had an intense interest in spiritualism and human psychology. As a writer he explored elements of both, which helped him create a vast body of work that is filled with mystical undertones.
In addition to an extensive list of short stories and novels, Blackwood wrote more than 30 fictional novels. As Blackwood gained notoriety for his writings he branched out into broadcasting and in the early 1930s was host and reader of ghost stories on BBC radio.
Fellow authors, H.P. Lovecraft and Arthur Machen in the weird fiction genre cite Blackwood as a greatly admired master of the ghost story. Ultimately, Blackwood’s legacy has helped raise the legitimacy of apparitions and specters in story form. In other words, leave a light on while reading Blackwood. All Algernon Blackwood books are believed to be in the public domain.
